Vignettes

 

​Once completed, a number of electronic images are created from the original painting. Within all of my paintings there can be found smaller compositions, “extracts” that attract the viewer’s attention. The visual elements are composed in such a way as to provide a sense of balance, harmony and even joy to the viewer. Within the larger painting, these extracts are self-contained within themselves. This is the notion of “holons”, that is, something that is simultaneously a whole in and of itself, as well as being a part of a larger whole.
Once identified, an electronic image of the extract is created, and manipulated further.  Ambient music is then combined and incorporated with the rolling images to create a short video. This music is a genre of music that focuses on sound patterns more than melodic form and is used to evoke a certain "atmospheric", "visual", or "unobtrusive" quality or state of mind.  It uses textural layers of sound including nature soundscapes, solfeggio frequencies and acoustic tones to encourage a sense of calm or contemplation.  I have collaborated with “Little Symphony”, a Canadian based international recording label, who produced the music.
 
The main objective of these vignettes is to encourage an audience to view an image in different and multiple ways, enhancing mindfulness and wellbeing through the human experience of seeing and hearing.
