The Process
About the Artist

The creative process of “abstract” painting enables me to explore inner feelings and “awareness”. The painting “process” is also analogous to the human journey. I have no topic or content in mind before the process begins. I start with lines that move in different directions to form shapes and divide up the two-dimensional page. This form of creative image making is often referred to as “Spontaneous Art” or “Free Art Expression”, meaning it is non-directive with no pre-conceived idea about how the image will eventually look. 

​​I find this exciting because the image unfolds as I progress, often with unexpected outcomes. With these apparent random markings, discourses are inevitably created. I sit with the painting, pondering where the next mark will be. In doing so I endeavor to sense an intuitive knowing to resolve the tension and create harmony and beauty. This creative process is one of pleasure and joy for me and I hope this is evident in the paintings. I think I can only paint these images now because of the stage of life I am in. I am at peace with myself and have a great sense of gratitude for the life I have lived and continue to live. I live in a free country surrounded by a rich abundance both physical and relational. At special times I have a sense of the Divine that is benevolent and loving, drawing us to a deeper state of reality and the human experience. For me, these images capture the pleasure, diversity, uniqueness and joy that can be our human experience.
